I know I’m not completely alone when I say this: There have been many occasions when I’ve been too tired and completely unmotivated to remove my makeup, wash my face and put on face cream at night. Although missing an occasional face wash won’t do my skin any permanent damage, it’s always good to maintain a healthy habit.
Dermatologist Macrene Renee Alexiades-Armenakas, MD, PhD, explained to Elle magazine that as we grow older, we can’t depend on our youth to combat the damage our makeup leaves on our skin overnight. She said, “When you sleep with makeup clogging the pores, the bacteria proliferate overnight. Pollutants and other bacteria adhere to the makeup and further add stress and damage to the skin. Leaving makeup on overnight can exacerbate breakouts and worsen the skin aging process.”
It makes perfect sense to wipe off the dust and dirt your face accumulates over the day, especially before turning in. Our skin repairs itself best at night, so your face will more than thank you for the “clean slate” before bedtime.
Here are a few tips to make your evening face-cleansing routine a little easier:
- Don’t wait until the last minute to wash your face. On most nights, I’ll wash my face and put on my face cream around 8 or 9 o’clock, a few hours before I go to bed. That way, when my eyes start feeling heavy and I’m ready to turn in for the night, I can hop into bed without a worry.
- If you’re extremely tired, keep some face wipes on hand so you can quickly give your face a once over. It may not be as good as washing your face thoroughly, but it’s a lot better than doing nothing at all.
- Lastly, it helps to love the products you use. When you believe so highly in your products and are confident in the results they deliver, it makes the cleansing process that much more rewarding. I use the Sebamed Clear Face Cleansing Foam at night, followed by Sebamed’s Q10 Age Defense Protection Cream. No matter how tired or unmotivated I feel, I look forward to smelling the light scent of Sebamed’s cleansing foam and feeling the softness of my face after using the face cream.
