Common Culprits of Thinning Hair
No one case of hair loss is the same as another. Many factors contribute to thinning hair including certain medications, genetics, poor diet, and excessive hairstyling. Though here are the most common causes of hair loss:
DHT Hormone
It is believed that when the body produces too much testosterone, it converts into a hormone called DHT. If your hair follicles are sensitive to DHT, this will cause them to weaken and shrink — resulting in hair loss.
Although men are more susceptible to DHT related hair loss, women can suffer from this as well. Women who have experienced hormonal changes may see an increase in hair shedding because an imbalance of the female hormone estrogen causes an increase in DHT production.
The only way to slow down DHT production and hair loss is to use a DHT blocker. These usually come in pill or topical form. Some topical DHT blockers include biotin, vitamin B12, B3 and B6, iron, Ginkgo Biloba, and caffeine.
Poor Circulation
When hair follicles weaken, it decreased blood flow to the scalp– less blood supply results in slower hair growth. For healthy hair to grow, it’s important to get proper circulation. Some known topical circulation boosters include caffeine, peppermint (menthol), and ricinoleic acid. All of these help to stimulate hair cells.
Scalp Conditions
Scalp conditions like scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis also impact hair growth. These conditions can cause severely itchy and dry scalp. Scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis don’t cause hair loss directly but constant scratching can irritate the scalp and stunt hair growth.
Seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis are said to be caused by an inflammatory immune response. Treatments include exfoliating ingredients like urea, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid.

Additional Tips for Thicker, Fuller Hair
Keep Hair Follicles Clear with Daily Shampooing. If your scalp produces excess oil daily, this could clog hair follicles and stunt hair growth. To remove oil and unclog follicles, wash your hair daily with a moisturizing and mild shampoo. The SebaMed Everyday Shampoo cleanses hair without stripping moisture or irritating the scalp.
Moisturize and Strengthen Hair from Root to Tip. Dry and brittle hair breaks easily. The SebaMed Repair Conditioner nourishes strands and locks in moisture and strengthens hair with ingredients like avocado oil and silk protein.
