Not all skin types are created equal. Those of us with oily skin have different skin care needs than those of us with dry skin. People with acne prone skin have different needs than those of us with combination skin. So, skin care is not one-size-fits-all, and it shouldn’t be. Everyone’s skin is different, and to own the skin you’re in, you have to know how to care for your skin. Caring for your skin starts with knowing your skin type. We’ve rounded up the 4 most common skin types so you can get more familiar with how to treat it.
Dry Skin
If you have dry skin, you’re familiar with flaking, itchiness, and rough texture. Your skin craves hydration and needs some extra help when it comes to retaining moisture. As your skin barrier loses oil and water, your body struggles to make up the difference. You’re going to need a little moisturizer in your life.
Oily Skin
Oily skin results from overactive sebaceous glands, which are responsible for the skin’s natural oil production. This natural oil, called sebum, is supposed to lubricate the skin and keep it hydrated. But, like too much of any good thing, excess sebum isn’t ideal. Excess sebum results in increased breakouts and shiny skin, so you should be on the lookout for oil-free items.
Combination Skin
Combination skin can be a bit tricky. Some parts of your skin are coated in oil while other areas are drier than the Sahara Desert. It may seem like a daunting task to find a happy medium, but fear not! There’s always a solution. Exfoliation and toner will be your new best friends.
Acne Prone Skin
As you probably know, acne isn’t just for teenagers. Breakouts can happen from infants and adults alike. When you have acne, either on your face or all over your body, it’s important to understand its causes and triggers and fight your breakouts with specifically formulated treatments.
Once you know your skin type, you can begin building your skin care routine. We’ve created this infographic that details the needs of all skin types to help you find the perfect skin care regimen.
