4 Types of Rosacea

It can be tough to tell the difference between rosacea and rosy cheeks. For those of us with rosacea, the redness lingers. Yet, as with all skin care conditions, everyone experiences rosacea differently. There are 4 types of rosacea, but more often than not, people exhibit symptoms from several types at once. Unsure which category you fall into? Because treatment differs based on your type of rosacea, we’ve outlined each type below to help you find the treatment plan that’s best for you. Healing, here you come!

Type 1: Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, or ETR, is the most common type of rosacea. When we think of rosacea, the facial redness, constant flushing, and visible blood vessels characteristic of ETR come to mind. Though there is no cure for ETR at this time, you can easily manage your symptoms. Taking a lukewarm shower with your favorite gentle body wash often calms flushing. Follow up your healthy skin care routine with anti-inflammatory topical treatments for faster relief.

Type 2: Papulopustular Rosacea

This type of rosacea is associated with breakouts that remind us all of our greasy teenage years. Most common in middle-aged women, papulopustular rosacea also causes acute sensitivity. Though, you can take oral antibiotics to combat your breakouts, you can also wash the affected areas with a gentle cleanser that supports a healthy skin barrier. Just test the product on a small patch of skin to ensure it doesn’t aggravate your condition.

Type 3:  Rhinophyma

While papulopustular rosacea is most common in women, rhinophyma primarily affects men. This type of rosacea is characterized by the thickening of the skin, especially around the nose. Someone with rhinophyma may also suffer from redness and symptoms of other subtypes. Most treatments are invasive, ranging from surgical procedures to radiation therapy, especially for more severe cases. Until you undergo your treatment, we recommend caring for your skin with gentle products.

Type 4: Ocular Rosacea

Ever experience redness around your eyes? You may be suffering from ocular rosacea, especially if this redness comes along with itchy or burning eyes and recurrent styes. While there is no approved treatment, you can easily take measures that provide you with some relief. Use artificial tears twice a day, and gently cleanse your eyelid and lash area with a washcloth and baby shampoo.

No matter what type or types of rosacea you have, Sebamed is here to help. We offer a wide range of washes and lotions that boost your skin barrier, promoting a healthy skin pH of 5.5 with every use. We want you to love the skin you’re in!
